An Incr-edible Waste

This year Stop Food Waste Day takes place on Wednesday 30 April.

As the name suggests, the event is an annual global awareness day dedicated to reducing food waste.

Astonishingly, a third of all food produced worldwide is lost or wasted every single year; and just a quarter of the food wasted globally could be used to feed the near 800 million undernourished people in the world.

However, food waste is not only a moral issue, it’s a key contributor to climate change too. Wasting food is a waste of the energy to grow, harvest, process and cook it, and food waste in landfill sites can cause emissions of methane - a potent greenhouse gas.

The aim is to draw attention to the issues, and at the same time educate through engaging with society at all levels and sharing practical, creative, and impactful ways we can all change our behaviour to reduce food waste.

Save The World Club supports the belief that food should be used and not dumped - that's why we collect surplus edibles from supermarkets that would otherwise be thrown away and deliver it to those in need on a daily basis.

We have also set up a "Community Fridge" providing free food for all, with no questions asked. So if you're struggling to feed yourself, drop by to pick up some gratis grub - see the poster below for details.

Another of our projects using food that would otherwise be discarded is the Square 1 Cafe:

And see below for a list of other places in the borough of Kingston where food is provided free of charge to those in need:
