DES KAY

Founder and Trsutee

Des is one of the key personnel working with the national Green Roadshow and has over 25 years experience creating shows and environmental educational exhibitions for local authorities for Save the World Club. He is the founder of the Glastonbury Festival’s Green Police Team. He has worked for the Environment Agency, GLA, Sutton Council, Bristol Environment Centre and countless schools and festivals around the UK. Des is the founder of Save the World club in 1985.

DR. TARIQ SHABBEER

Secretary General

Tariq manages Save The World Club's governance and is the acting Treasurer, Company & Charity Secretary and principal fundraiser. Tariq has held a PhD in Acid Rain / Climate Change since 1992. He lives in New Malden, Kingston and has been a trustee and director for over eight years. He has 30 years experience as a fundraiser, bid writing consultant, social entrepreneur and business adviser. He is also a published poet, singer / songwriter, guitarist, chef and Green activist. Tariq says, “We all have to work together to Save the World. So help our Club by acting locally and thinking globally. I guarantee you will make friends, save money and have lots of fun at the same time”.

ROLAND LAWRENCE

Kingston Orchard Project Lead and Trustee

Roland has created a wellbeing humanistic psychology presentation using charts to explain the very importance of our social needs and thus our theory of change. He has also taken the lead on our work to create an enjoyable garden next to our warehouse where a chalice was found and to christen the garden as The Chalice Garden. He also leads work on our Orchard and forest garden at Knollmead allotments, Tolworth. 

Essentially Roland is a hands on sort of person giving up ship repair to study Sociology, counselling, group work and then work as a youth and community officer in London for a number of years.

PARISHA PATEL

Food Support Team Lead and Trustee

Parisha manages all the food collections from various supermarkets and distributing the food collected to various locations. These involve food banks, churches, distribution centres where folks can come collect the food.  Since Parisha joined STWC, she has grown the number of supermarkets that we regularly collect the food which aids the community. She is also managing training for the food volunteers making sure everyone follows food safety and hygiene.  All of the above is in addition to her regular Global Program Manager’s role at a leading TMC. Parisha got her BSc Hons in Computer Science from Kingston university after migrating from her birthplace in Kenya.

JOHN HEWLETT

Conceptualist

John began his involvement with Save the World Club after meeting Tariq at the gym, where he remains a frequent goer. He grew up in London and attended Kingston University. He worked as a band manager in Hollywood and in London where he worked as a talent acquisition manager in music publishing for The Beatles original Apple record label and later in A&R for A&M Records. Now, John focuses his time and energy on expanding Save the World Club, particularly bringing in new and innovative projects for Save the World Club.

HUGH WILLIAMS

Media, Marketing and Business Development Consultant

Hugh is in charge of social media, its content and posts. He graduated from Kingston University in 2018 with a Degree in Biochemistry, he is currently using the time while COVID is a forefront issue to help STWC grow, reach their target audience more effectively, diversify his skill set and improve relevance during a current and future Covid society. He is also volunteering with Healthwatch Kingston and has previously volunteered as a co-ordinator with FastMinds to help run Neurodiversity festivals. Prior to this he was helping to run an after-school computer club for primary school children.

OLIVIA FONG

Kingston Community Kitchen Coordinator

Olivia has over 12 years experience of working in the charity sector in Hong Kong, mainly focused on supporting migrant workers and vulnerable individuals from South East Asia and Africa, as well as promoting diversity and inclusion in Hong Kong society through organising community events. She designed training programmes, seminars for improving their knowledge and skills and provided advice to widen their future career choices. Also, Olivia planned various cultural integration activities and set up volunteer team to enhance their wellbeing and to develop their sense of belonging while working abroad in supporting their families. She has moved to Kingston in August 2023 and got to know more about this lovely neighbourhood and to meet different people more through volunteering. Olivia hopes to see you all in our workshops and special events! ;)

KIM PORRELLI

Lead Artist

Kim is a freelance mosaic artist and has worked on many projects with Save the World Club. She has applied her stained glass and artistic skills to full effect and has worked with Save the World Club since 2002.

Kim  runs regular mosaic making classes from the Circulatory.
