A fortnight of green-themed events and activities will put environmental and sustainability issues firmly in the spotlight later this month.
Kingston's first Paint the Town Green festival will run from Friday 25 May until Saturday 9 June and will feature a whole host of community events that aim to entertain, educate and inform residents. The festival has come about thanks to a joint effort by Kingston Council, Kingston Green Fair, Save the World Club and many of Kingston's other environmental groups.
With events as varied as a public screening of Al Gore's acclaimed documentary An Inconvenient Truth right through to Real Nappy Starter Classes, there's sure to be something to interest everyone. The headline event of the festival will be the Kingston Green Fair, which takes place on 28 May and will be celebrating its 20th year.
Councillor Liz Shard, Executive Member for Sustainability and Biodiversity at Kingston Council, said: There are now lots of organisations in the borough that are working to protect our environment. The Paint the Town Green festival will give these groups an opportunity to promote their work on a larger scale than normal.
Environmental issues are now, more than ever, at the forefront of people's minds. Kingston Council wants to lead the way in helping residents make an informed choice about how to protect the local and global environment. Events like Paint the Town Green will help them to do just that.

Green Fair 2006
Again this year Save the World Club's presence
at the Green Fair was a masive success. We ran
a mosaic club, a scrap club, a bric a brac stall
and had the Green Police looking after the environment.
Save the World would like to take this chance
to thank all the volunteers who gave up their
bank holiday to come and help out on the day.
It is always very much appreciated and of course,
we couldn't do it without you!
April 2006 Dave Connet ran London
Marathon for the Save the World Club
Dear all,
I finished in 4:59 yesterday. I ran the whole
distance but was incredibly slow at the end. I
started OK but steadily tired after halfway -
the last 6 miles were too tough to describe.
Today, stiff legs, big blisters and sore nipples
- par for the course. The atmosphere was brilliant,
in spite of the rain, and it's quite an experience
to run with such a vast number of people.
As previously promised (and Becky will thank me
for doing so) NEVER again!
Many, many thanks to all who've kindly sponsored
me, both online and in cash, and it's not too
late to donate online - details below.
Thanks again for all your encouragement.
Cheers,
Dave
Daves heroics means he goes to the top of the
queue for Green Police Glastonbury Festival Tickets
2007, all the volunteers and Friends of SWC will
be able to do this for being involved in raising
money for SWC its a small thanks of our appreciation
for your personal part in Saving the World!
We have to start somewhere.....
Thanks again Dave, brilliant!

Professor Kayoss van has
been lost to arsonists
Professor Kayoss' (Des
Kay) van was torched just after he had finished
a green environmental kids show a few weeks ago.
He had just loaded up his van after the show and
was ready for the long drive home when he left
his vehicle for a short while to take his son
to a nearby park. When he returned the van was
ablaze. His clothes, costumes and bike was destroyed
along with most of his sons toys. Fortunately
his Amazing Cycle Powered Answer to Everything
Machine, the main part of his act, was saved by
firemen.
"The fire brigade, which arrived promptly,
managed to retrieve my livelihood The Answer to
Everything Machine before the van exploded within
10 minutes. My costume, clothes and bike were
burnt out."
We need a new vehicle before the new season arrives
next spring. Not only is it used by Prof Kayoss,
but it is used extensively in our community mosaic
work. We need about £4,000 on top of all
our fundraising, so we are looking for a van,
loan, or financial help and would appreciate any
donations.
Des is hiring a van until the money can be raised
to buy a replacement. News

Des
Kay meets the Prime Minister
Save the World Club founder, Des Kay met the Prime
Minister Tony Blair in celebration and recognition
of his work as a leading environmentalist in the
UK. Having arranged beforehand that he could
park his bicycle in Downing Street, little did
they realise that he would be arriving on one
of his famous display bikes! Unfortunately
he couldn't padlock it on the railings outside
No.10 but it had pride of place just inside the
main gates.
The evening reception, hosted by the Right Honourable
Tony Blair MP and his wife, Cherie Blair was the
first to thank and celebrate extraordinary people
who work for their environment. A hundred
invited guests had the opportunity to meet the
Prime Minister and talk about some of the environmental
and green issues facing the country today.
SWC founder Des Kay had the opportunity to discuss
the group's recent award-winning anti-graffiti
initiative and to present the Prime Minister with
a copy of the SWC music CD Enviro-mental.
