Headed by Howard Grange the project lasted just three
weeks in the Summer break. The brief was to brighten
up a heavily graffiti'd storage area right in the middle
of the estate and revitalise a toddlers playground that
was also suffering heavily from graffiti.
SWC mosaic artist and decorator Jackie Mcintosh took
on the playground and enlisted the help of many of the
local lads from the estate who worked into the night
to scrape the mess away and repaint the whole area.
Howard quickly got the local children involved in the
planning of the mosaics with some key help from the
local adult residents.
The children took on the role of designers with help
from Howard, Jackie and Lucy Steggals (SWC). We decided
to make seven big mosaics each detailing a part of the
childrens lives be it the food they eat, the games they
play or the dreams they have when they are asleep.
It was a tall order in the time we had but we did it
and hundred's of residents took part. We had the help
also of SWC volunteers Maria Morales and Nicky Benge
who both proved invaluable.
Both Howard and Jackie would like to take the chance
here to say thankyou to everyone who took part and especially
to the residents of the Estate who made us feel so welcome
and organised a great opening celebration party on the
last day!
