Born 1928, Vienna, Austria.
Died February 19th 2000
In community partnership with: pupils from Latchmere
Junior School, St Agatha's School, St Luke's School,
Grey Court School and residents of the Royal Borough
of Kingston upon Thames, Youth Offenders Team, John
Lewis and Unilever volunteer workforce. 'A study of
Hundertwasser has been designed and coordinated by Karen
Parry for Save the World Club.
More than one thousand eight hundred (1,800) local people
came together as volunteers in 942 mosaic making sessions
to complete the project. It is the largest of its kind
in the UK and took two and a half years to complete.
There were 17 artists involved and more than 50 other
adult volunteers involved on a long term basis with
the management, installation, funding, training and
also council officials and other stakeholders. There
were more than 30 businesses and 7 schools, including
schools with special needs young people and even workplace
volunteer programmes with companies including John Lewis
and Unilever. Many young offenders took part in the
project.
The massive work was directed by local artist and mother
of three, Karen Parry. She oversaw the entire project
including design, worked the whole time and installed
the work herself with a team of loyal workers. Her innovation
and use of materials, her own interpretations and ability
to support and inspire others to get the best out of
the medium of mosaics is a credit to her.
The completed mosaic mural is on permanent display in
Skerne Road and Canbury Passage Kingston. Come and see
for yourself how sensational it is!
